HISTORY The secrets of the origin of “Trejos devynerios” (Three Times Nine) take their roots in the depths of ages. People have always believed in the magical power of plants – they used to keep a herb whisk at home, used to grind the herbs, roots and peels to powder, make magic teas or burn the bundles of herbs trying to catch the ‘spirit’ of the plants. In length of time people noticed that a sprinkle of herbs or roots added to a strong alcoholic drink changes its taste and colour. This was the starting point of the tradition to produce herb brandy that continues to thrive up till the present day. It’s noteworthy that the herb brandy differed depending on whom it was made by – bourgeois, chemists or by country herbalist. With centuries passing by, some of the recipes faded away, while others, on the contrary, were taken on. Formula of the bitter “Trejos devynerios” was already known in the XIII–XV century. It is beleived that the recipe of Trejos devynerios may have been created already in the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Vytautas the Great and was passed from mouth to mouth. In the beginning of the 20th century the old recipe of our ancestors was revived by the experts of the joint-stock company Stumbras AB. COMPOSITION AND TASTE Trejos devynerios is a „magical“ synonim of the number 27. The herb brandy, made by Stumbras AB, as written in the ancient recipe, contains 27 herbs, roots, bark and fruit. These are only a few of them: angelica, rhubarb, gentian, galangal, black pepper, allspice pepper, red pepper, ginger, muscat nuts and blossoms, bitter orange, peels of orange and lemon, bark of black alder, cinnamon, star anise, seeds of love-in-a-mist, holy grass, cardamom. Other components are kept in secret. Alcohol strength – 40%. In the production of bitter Stumbras uses only rectified cereal ethyl alcohol of the “Lux” kind drinking water filtered through six-stage filtration system (including filtration in the way of reverse osmosis), and ratafia made of 27 different herbs, applying a specific technology. To achieve transparency, the bitter is filtered through specific filters, using the filter cardboard of the highest grade. All of that enables securing steady taste and flavour of the product, as well as other quality indices. AWARDS “Trejos devynerios” was awarded with - silver medal at the international competition ‘DLG-Qualitätswettbewerb Spirituosen 2005’ (International DLG Quality Competition for Spirits 2005) that took place in Germany,

- silver medal at the international exhibition ‘Riga Food 1999’ (Latvia),

- double gold medal at the competition „San Francisco world spirits competition 2006” for taste. “Trejos devynerios” was valued as flavoured vodka and competed with such famous worldwide brands like „Smirnoff“, „Stolichnaya“, „Svedka“. “Trejos devynerios” was the first and the only Lithuanian bitter that won double gold medal.
In April 2006, “Trejos devynerios” has won 2 stars at the International Taste &Quality Institute "Superior Taste Award 2006" that took place in Belgium.

HISTORY There are two versions of the origin of the name Starka Lithuanian. Starka is special vodka, which used to be made on the occasion of the birth of the first son. The name of this vodka is purely Lithuanian, is comes from an old Lithuanian word starkus - even now it still means “stork”, and this is related to the popular Lithuanian explanation that it is storks that bring new babies to the family.
Russian. Nowadays, some linguists say that Starka might have derived from Slavic word старая (“old”), i.e. Starka could mean старая vodka (“old vodka”). Production of Starka, as a spirituous beverage, was started more than 100 years ago. It is especially popular in Lithuania and Russia.
COMPOSITION AND TASTE
Only the Starka produced following the old traditions may be reckoned the traditional Starka. It is obvious for strong drink experts, who have read many historical references, that the genuine Starka must be produced of the highest quality grain spirit and natural raw materials of vegetative origin.
According to the old traditional formulas, the genuine Starka should be as follows: a drink that has brown colour, well harmonized herbal aroma, and easily recognizable, skillfully balanced lingering flavour produced only of natural ratafia of apple and pear leaves and other raw materials of vegetative origin, brandy, wine, and at least alc. 43% volume.

Taste researches
When a wide range of Starka bitters made by different producers has become available at shopping chains, on the 5th October 2001, in a tasting bar, ‘Stumbras’ organized closed Starka tasting session by independent experts, at the presence of experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Vilnius Nutrition Centre, Kaunas University of Technology, representatives of Lithuanian wholesale chain enterprises, guests from various organizations and journalists. At their presence (bottles were numbered from 1 to 5, without specifying the producer), at a closed tasting session, “Stumbro Starka” was evaluated as the best by taste qualities among the five Starka drinks and awarded first place.
